Fishing

Considered to be West Virginia’s premier fishing impoundment, Stonewall Jackson Lake offers excellent fishing for a number of species including largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, perch and musky.  Fishing is an important part of the lake management of Stonewall Jackson.  Approximately 40% of the lake is “No Wake” zoned, most of which has standing timber or other structures appropriate for good fish cover.  For more information contact the DNR District office at French Creek 304-924-6211 or visit their web site at www.dnr.state.wv.us.  Consult West Virginia Fishing Regulations for current fishing rules and regulations.  A West Virginia fishing license is required to fish in West Virginia.

  • Largemouth Bass - Special “catch and release” regulations apply to largemouth bass fishing.  All bass must be immediately returned to the water.  Fishing is excellent for bass on a variety of lures throughout the year.

  • Catfish are caught most of the summer months on live bait and chicken livers.

  • Crappie fishing is excellent in spring using crappie jigs and jigs tipped with minnows in the standing timber areas and brush piles along the lake shore.

  • Bluegills are caught throughout the season with night crawlers in most areas of the lake

  • Yellow Perch are found around structure as well as on the lake bottom using live bait and jigs.

  • Most musky are found while trolling along the open, deeper waters closer to the dam.

In addition to the trails on the park, numerous abandoned roads crisscross the adjacent Wildlife Management Area offering miles of hiking and biking opportunities.  Limited traffic on these roads is restricted to authorized vehicles only.
