Jackson Lake
Stonewall
Jackson Lake is West Virginia’s second largest
impoundment offering 26 miles of lake encompassing
2,650 surface acreage of water and 82 miles of
shoreline. Created
in the mid 1980's for the purposes of flood
protection, water quality control, water supply and
recreation, the US Army Corps of Engineers project
dams the West Fork River and Skin Creek near Weston
WV. For

Fishing
Considered to be West Virginia’s premier
fishing impoundment, Stonewall Jackson Lake offers
excellent fishing for a number of species including
largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, perch
and musky. Fishing
is an important part of the lake management of
Stonewall Jackson.
Approximately 40% of the lake is “No
Wake” zoned, most of which has standing timber or
other structures appropriate for good fish cover.

A West Virginia fishing license is required
to fish in West Virginia.

Largemouth
Bass - Special “catch and release” regulations
apply to largemouth bass fishing.
All bass must be immediately returned to
the water. Fishing is excellent for bass on a variety of lures throughout the year.

Catfish
are caught most of the summer months on live bait
and chicken livers.

Crappie
fishing is excellent in spring using crappie jigs
and jigs tipped with minnows in the standing
timber areas and brush piles along the lake shore.

Bluegills
are caught throughout the season with night
crawlers in most areas of the lake

Yellow
Perch are found around structure as well as on the
lake bottom using live bait and jigs.

Most
musky are found while trolling along the open,
deeper waters closer to the dam.

Boat
Rentals
In addition to the 4 luxury houseboats
available for rent (see accommodations), Stonewall
Jackson Lake State Park rents pontoon boats and
fishing boats. The fishing boats are equipped with 25hp outboard motors,
most with swivel seats.
The pontoon boats are equipped with 50hp
outboards with center consol steering. Life jackets, anchors and all safety equipment are provided
with rentals. Boats
may be rented on an hourly, daily or weekly basis. Reservations are recommended especially for weekends and holidays.

Hunting
Although hunting is not permitted on Stonewall
Jackson Lake State Park, hunting opportunities are
found on the adjacent Stonewall Jackson Wildlife
Management Area.
Over 18,000 acres of huntable lands provide
good hunting for most species of game.
Additionally, most acreage is accessible only
by boat, foot or bicycle, offering a unique hunting
experience. For

Hiking
and Biking
At present, limited trails are available on the
State Park. A
fitness trail located in the picnic area and the
Overlook Trail, which leads to an observation area
overlooking the lake and marina, are the established
trails on the park.

In addition to the trails on the park, numerous abandoned roads crisscross the
adjacent Wildlife Management Area offering miles of
hiking and biking opportunities.
Limited traffic on these roads is restricted to
authorized vehicles only. |
